I grew up in the great state of Maine, trudging to school through the snow at the crack of dawn uphill both ways with no shoes. Eventually, I ended up on the beautiful Swarthmore College campus where I earned a B.A. in Physics and Computer Science, and I got my first taste of research working with Professor Amy L. R. Graves. Since then, I've earned an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst as part of the Ph.D. program.
I'm excited about research in computer science in general because of the unique duality it supports between fundamental, scientific discovery and low-lag, high-impact improvements for many aspects of peoples' lives. It is incredibly satisfying to see an idea grow into an algorithm and then into a working prototype that can solve a previously unsolved problem.
My research is primarily in robotics and related fields, and usually applied to robotic perception. To be generally capable, robots will eventually need complex models of their environment and all its possibilities and uncertainties. Much of my research focuses on building, updating, or querying these models more accurately, more robustly, and more efficiently.
